At the Innovative Smart Grid Technologies (ISGT) Europe Conference, a flagship conference organized by the IEEE Power Energy Society on 14th-17th October 2024 in Dubrovnik, one of the works of the ETF Alexander project was awarded a Best Paper Award.
The winning paper was titled “Operating envelopes for the grid-constrained use of distributed flexibility in balancing markets”, authored by A. Kaushal, W. Ananduta, L. Marques, T. Cuypers, and A. Sanjab, all of whom are affiliated with VITO Water and Energy Transition Unit. At the conference, the paper was presented by Wicak Ananduta.
The awards were given to three outstanding papers out of more than 400 research papers accepted and presented at the conference. The selection process involved a pre-selection of 2% of the best papers based on the reviews of independent reviewers. These papers were then re-reviewed by an awarding committee both for written and oral presentation.
The paper discusses how the integration of operating envelopes into balancing markets can help ensure grid-safe utilization of distributed flexibility resources. It also shows that the calculation of operating envelopes of distributed flexibility must be done appropriately to achieve the aforementioned goal while minimizing the potential loss in market efficiency.
